The gorgeous colors of autumn give way to the quiet, calm beauty of winter.  A mountain river that was the picture of energy and life in the summer becomes the picture of peace in the winter [as in “Hush (winter river landscape photo)”].

Newly fallen snow blankets the earth in its purity (as in “Stillness of a Winter's Day Photo”), and Nature carves ice into beautiful sculptures from the water and the wind [as in “Frozen River Jewels (Natural Ice Sculptures) Photo”]. 

While glimpses of animals become fewer, they are still there hiding in the snowy forests and trees.  Cardinals especially stand out in this monotone background, but chickadees and woodpeckers still make their appearances too. 

Fox, deer, and many other animals still come out in the winter.  Even if you can’t find them, you can see where they have been from the tracks they left behind in the snow.  Being able to “read” the comings and goings of animals more easily than any other time of year is one of the charms of winter.
